Statement in support of the consent decree

From the humble beginnings of this group, it has always been our mission to assist in recreating our community through citizen engagement, empowerment, and accountability in a sincere endeavor to move toward ONE Ferguson. The name ONE Ferguson represents our hope for a unified community.

As we read and reflect on the proposed consent decree with the Department of Justice, we see a vision of a unified community. A vision of police officers who are stakeholders in our community. A vision of dialogue and mediation to resolve conflicts, and a vision of engaging citizens to assist in the process of providing accountability.

Agreeing to the consent decree allows our city to move forward and sets a clear goal of what “the new normal” will be. It is an opportunity for Ferguson to serve as the example for every other municipality in St Louis County to follow. It allows for trust to be restored within our community, giving business owners and entrepreneurs reason to again look to Ferguson as a community of choice. Most importantly, it allows our children to be raised in a community where the color of their skin does not impact how they are treated by their justice system.

While the agreement is not perfect, and it is difficult to estimate the complete cost of implementing it, walking away from it will surely bring more heartbreak to this city. Ferguson would go to trial against the DOJ, facing huge court costs. The DOJ would likely win this trial, and Ferguson would have to implement most of the items in the decree anyway, making it more expensive in the end. If the council were to adopt the proposal, specific points of disagreement may be argued in the Fairness Hearing before a federal judge.

Implementing the consent decree won’t be easy, and we will face new challenges ahead. Meaningful change rarely comes without hard work.We believe that Ferguson is ready to move forward and that through these efforts its people will be made stronger. It is for all of these reasons that we endorse approving the consent degree.
